Dan Russell is a highly regarded stone carver, letter carver, and sculptor whose work reflects a rare blend of tradition, innovation, and craftsmanship. From humble beginnings on the Liverpool docks to mastering classical techniques in London and Florence, Dan’s journey is rooted in dedication and artistic excellence. He holds a First Class Honours Degree in Historical Stone Carving from the City & Guilds of London Art School and is a graduate of The Heatherley School of Fine Art. Further honing his skills at the Florence Academy of Art, he completed the three-year program and was awarded a prestigious assistant teaching scholarship. Now based in Pietrasanta, Italy—where he collaborates with Quarra Italia—Dan is a Queen Elizabeth Scholar working on bespoke commissions and sharing his passion through teaching. Dan has a public work in the Chapel of St Thomas’s Hospital, London. The piece is called ‘The Last Shift’ and is a Covid Memorial for the medical staff that lost their lives during the pandemic. Dan also has works in Private collections.
His close friendship with the Florence Academy of Art was fundamental in establishing their first ever Marble Carving workshop in Pietrasanta which Dan taught, along side Martin Foot. The workshop continues annually.
Dan continues to teach along side working for private commission and collaborating with Quarra Italia at Studio Cervietti.
